In the context of the problem of studying the features of life in the penitentiary society, the results of a survey of the staff of the penal enforcement system on the origin and functioning of small groups of prisoners in places of deprivation of liberty are presented. It is noted the specificity of the formation and dynamics of development of small groups of convicts, which is due to a number of factors, including characteristics of the conditions of serving criminal punishment, the prevailing mood of convicts, the General psychological atmosphere in prison, the influence of informal leaders of the prison society. The results of the survey showed that the majority of employees working with convicts are aware of the presence of small groups in the institution, both positive and negative. At the same time, a significant part of the staff does not have the required amount of information that is necessary for effective influence on prisoners who are part of informal groups. A set of measures of psychological, educational, regime and operational nature aimed at neutralizing informal groups of convicts, as well as their leaders, is proposed.
