The study of the history of the formation and development of a phenomenon allows us to determine further trends in the development of this phenomenon. The same applies to the study of issues related to criminal penalties. It is possible to determine the necessity and prospects for the existence of a particular type of punishment, including taking into account the previous historical period of development of the state and law.
Correctional work organically combines punitive, preventive and educational measures, which, when properly assigned and executed, leads to their high efficiency in terms of achieving the goals of correction facing the criminal law.
Historically, correctional labor, as the main type of criminal punishment imposed by the court, is a relatively new type of alternative to imprisonment. Despite attempts to single out this type of punishment during the existence of the Russian Empire, correctional labor as a criminal punishment began to be included in criminal legislation only with the establishment of Soviet power.
This research is devoted to the analysis of historical stages of formation and development of such criminal punishment as correctional labor.
