Annotation:
The article analyzes the relationship between the severity of punishment and the prevention of crime. Preventive action is part of the crime prevention system. Considering the influence of various factors on the level of crime, its growth and spread, it seems interesting to study the effect of legal responsibility on crime prevention. The article analyzes the level of crime depending on the level of severity of punishment for crimes committed. The experience of the application of Russian legislation, as well as the legislation of foreign countries in the aspect of toughening responsibility for committed criminal acts is considered. The data under consideration indicate that the strengthening of criminal liability measures in the form of punishment does not give a serious preventive effect, nordoes it help to prevent the commission of new crimes. Thus, the author concludes that strengthening repressive measures is not an effective measure to combat crime.
